Professor Nana Ama Klutse has been appointed by President John Dramani Mahama as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A distinguished climate scientist and advocate for sustainable development, Prof. Klutse’s appointment signals a bold step forward for the nation’s environmental agenda. Her appointment was officially announced by the Presidency on 18th January 2025.
Prof. Ama Browne Klutse brings a wealth of experience to her new role. As an Associate Professor in Climate Science at the University of Ghana, she has been instrumental in advancing climate research and education in the country. Her expertise lies in climate modeling, adaptation strategies, and capacity building, areas that are crucial for Ghana’s response to climate change.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prof. Klutse described the appointment as both an honour and a significant responsibility to serve the nation.
Her appointment comes at a time when Ghana faces pressing environmental challenges, including illegal mining, deforestation, plastic pollution, and the impacts of climate change. Prof. Klutse’s track record of academic excellence and policy advocacy makes her uniquely positioned to tackle these issues.
Over the years, Prof. Klutse has made significant contributions to both national and international climate initiatives. She has been a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and has collaborated with global institutions to address climate resilience in Africa. Her research has focused on developing practical solutions to environmental problems, ensuring that vulnerable communities are not left behind in the pursuit of sustainability.
Prof. Klutse has also been a vocal advocate for gender equity in climate science, mentoring young women to pursue careers in STEM fields. Her leadership style is inclusive and forward-thinking, emphasizing stakeholder engagement and innovative approaches to environmental management.
Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse is a Vice-Chair of IPCC’s Working Group I for the seventh assessment cycle. She was a Lead Author on the Sixth Assessment Report. She is the Head at the Department of Physics, University of Ghana, Legon. She is a fellow of African Institute of Mathematical Sciences – Next Einstein Initiative women in Climate Change Science. She was a Senior Research Scientist and a Manager at the Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. She holds a PhD in Climatology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
