The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) will be launched in Kete Krachi on May 30, 2025.
The programme aims to inject an additional 100MW of renewable power into the national grid through mini-grids serving island communities, rooftop solar systems for small and medium enterprises, households, and public institutions, as well as solar home systems for off-grid homes and facilities.
He made this announcement at the commissioning of a 532kwp ground solar PV plant built by Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana Ltd on Wednesday in Tema.
He disclosed that preparations are underway for Phase Two of the SREP, which will extend renewable energy access to over 150 islands in the Afram Plains, supporting Ghana’s goal of achieving 99.8% electricity access by 2030.
“The government would begin nationwide deployment of smart reversible meters that would enable households and businesses to export excess solar power to the national grid and enhance energy efficiency by the end of the year,” he added.
Mr Jinapor emphasised the importance of rooftop solar in strengthening energy security and positioning Ghanaian products for competitive advantage in global markets, prioritizing environmental responsibility.
He noted that the commissioning of the solar plant signifies more than just a new facility; it reflects Ghana’s collective resolve to build a sustainable, green economy driven by innovation and public-private collaboration.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting local content and ensuring that Ghanaian products and services benefit from favorable policies.
The Minister congratulated Nexans Kabel metal’s leadership and workforce for their role in building Ghana’s green future, calling their efforts “the bricks of Ghana’s green future, brick by solar-powered brick.”
