A group of civil society organizations have threatened to sue the government of Ghana over what they describe as deliberate failure to protect forest reserves in the country.
The CSOs – Arocha Ghana, Tropenbos Ghana, Civic Response, Nature and Development Foundation, and EcoCare Ghana have raised red flag over recent declassification of Globally Significant Biodiversity Areas (GSBAs) within some forest reserves including the Subri River Forest Reserve and Krokosua Hills Forest Reserve. This development has resulted in the subsequent awarding of a Timber Utilization Contract to some logging Companies to operate in both forest reserves.
In a press release cited by The Climate Insight, the group contends that the governments latest action amounts to a breach of due process and legal stipulation. They urged the Government to reconsider its actions and engage constructively in resolving this matter in accordance with the rule of law and best practices in natural resource management.
